First day back

As we return to school in brand new January, it’s easy to feel sleepy and shocked by the early buzzing of the alarm clock, especially because of the pitch black sky. However, as I stood with a colleague this morning at 7:10am and watched students clamor off the bus and into their friend groups, sleepiness is not what I felt. I found myself saying “missed you” and “can’t wait to hear about your vacation” which  was met with smiles or “you too”, at the very worst it was met with a shy 5th grade eye roll. I truly missed the kids and it feels good to be back at it.

January is the perfect time to revamp routines; this morning we started a new school-wide system for breakfast. The students ate more, talked more, and laughed more.  We worked as a team and confirmed changing routines with each other for consistency. There are always opportunities for growth but this morning genuinely felt like an important success; our mornings often define our days
